How Do You Get to Hirosaki and Ride the Dotemachi Loop Bus?
This guide is for visitors who want to reach Hirosaki, the castle town in western Aomori Prefecture, and get around once they arrive. It covers flights, the Shinkansen, express buses, local trains and the loop bus that links the station with the castle park.
We used the English pages of the Hirosaki Tourism and Convention Bureau. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Timetables and fares change, so treat them as a snapshot and confirm with the operators before you book.
By air
Hirosaki does not have its own airport. The bureau lists Aomori Airport as the main gateway, with a bus to Hirosaki of about 55 minutes run by Konan Bus. It gives these flight times:
- Tokyo Haneda to Aomori: about 1 hour 15 minutes, Japan Airlines.
- Osaka Itami: about 1 hour 30 minutes, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.
- Sapporo Chitose: about 45 minutes, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.
- Nagoya Komaki: about 1 hour 20 minutes, and Kobe about 1 hour 40 minutes, Fuji Dream Airlines.
- Seoul Incheon: about 2 hours 20 minutes. Taipei: about 3 hours 30 minutes.
The bureau also lists an airport shuttle from Odate-Noshiro Airport to Hirosaki Park, about 80 minutes and 3,300 yen one way. It runs only in set periods, so check the dates on the bureau's page.
By Shinkansen and train
The fastest rail route is the Tohoku Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori Station. The bureau gives about 3 hours 10 minutes from Tokyo. From Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto it is about 1 hour. At Shin-Aomori you change to the limited express Tsugaru on the JR Ou Line, which takes about 30 minutes to Hirosaki.
The same express runs from Akita to Hirosaki in about 2 hours. Two local lines of the Konan Railway also serve the town. The Konan Line runs from Kuroishi in about 30 minutes, and the Owani Line runs from Owani to Chuo-Hirosaki in about 30 minutes.
By highway bus from Tokyo
The bureau lists a bus from Shinagawa Terminal that takes about 9 hours 15 minutes, with one overnight trip a day. It also lists buses from in front of Ueno Station, taking 9 hours to 9 hours 30 minutes, with one daytime and two overnight trips a day. Book through the bus company.
Getting around: the Dotemachi Loop Bus
The bureau calls the Dotemachi Loop Bus convenient for sightseeing. Its page, last updated on 1 October 2026, gives these facts:
- The fare is a flat 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for children in cash. With an IC card it is 180 yen and 90 yen.
- Suica, PASMO, AOPASS and other major IC cards are accepted.
- It runs every 10 minutes. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00 from April to November and 10:00 to 17:00 from December to March.
- Main stops include JR Hirosaki Station (stop D100), the Hirosaki Park stop in front of City Hall, and Naka-Dotemachi.
- You board at the front door. You touch your IC card or pay cash when you get off.
An all-day ticket covers the Dotemachi Loop Bus and the Joto Loop Bus. It costs 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children, IC card only. To reach the park, take the loop bus from the station's central exit and get off at the City Hall stop.
The bureau says the park is about a 30-minute walk from the station, or about 15 minutes on the loop bus. Between 30 October and 8 November 2026 the loop bus runs extra trips from 18:30 to 20:00, every 30 minutes, for the autumn festival.
Other ways to move
- The Tsugaru Free Pass gives two days of unlimited train and bus rides in a set area around Hirosaki. We did not find the price.
- Buses toward Mount Iwaki stop at Iwakiyama Jinja-mae. The bureau lists 720 yen from JR Hirosaki Station and 660 yen from the City Hall stop at the park entrance.
- Rental bicycles are available through Cycle Net Hirosaki, which the bureau links.
